Shore Time: Art Design Place

October 1–3, 2026
Fogo Island, NL

Shore Time is a biannual gathering hosted by Fogo Island Arts, where artists, curators, critics, architects, and designers meet at the edge of the North Atlantic to explore human-centred making and the specificity of place.

Both art and design are about more than appearances and styling - we may better think of each as proposing novel models of collaborative problem solving that address and give form to our present-day and future needs, expectations, and experiences. Art and design look beyond the creation of discrete objects to model new entanglements of people, things, and place. And both are at the heart of the regenerative project of Fogo Island Arts and Shorefast. For this iteration of Shore Time, we are convening some of today's most visionary artists and designers and bringing them into conversation to learn how they think about human-centred making.

Over three days of dynamic conversation, we will ask how artists and designers live, think, and make in these changing times. We start with the basic questions that have served us well: What do we know? What do we have? What do we miss? and What do we love? From there, we will delve into the wide-ranging projects of our presenters, who are focused on questions of innovation, agency, and change as they engage with the world.

The distinct communities of Fogo Island, with their range of local makers, provide a unique context that grounds these conversations.
